Viber is the third largest online phone and chat service after Facebook and WhatsApp. Worldwide, 800 million people use the app on smartphones, tablets and computers.
Presentation
Viber was launched in December 2010 and was initially only available on iPhone, but since May 2011 it has been available on Android and later on Windows phones.
Viber is a free downloadable app that lets you make free online calls or send messages to people you know. In the beginning, most people used it as a netphone, but nowadays it's used more for messaging, as a free alternative to texting.
Now you can make a simple call, make a video call, send pictures as well as text messages, and even play games.
Installation
You should download the app on your smartphone first, where you will need to enter your phone number after installation. To confirm, Viber will send us a 4-digit code that we need to enter, and then we can start using the app. We can message or call anyone for free who is in our phone's contacts list and also uses Viber. You can even link the app to Facebook, but it's important to note that the contacts list will still only include people whose phone numbers you know.
If you want to use the app on other platforms, you'll see a QR code at the end of the installation, which you can authenticate by scanning it with Viber on your phone. All the app's features are available from your computer and tablet, so you can text anyone or even call people you know. Viber runs flawlessly on both Windows and iOS.
Using
The app is very simple to use. We select the name of our friend from the contact list, and then Viber offers us several options in a pop-up window. Here you can choose whether you want to send them a free message or make a free call. Under the two main features, you'll find other options: free video call, Viber Out call (no longer free, but with low call rates) or mobile call (which is essentially the same as a normal call, but made from within the app and at the usual rates)
Messaging works in a similar way to Skype or Messenger. As well as text, you can use emoticons, stickers and even GIFs in your chat. You can also create group chats with up to 250 people. This feature can be extremely useful even for workplace information flow.
When calling by phone, you have similar options as in the traditional case. You can put the call on speakerphone, put it on hold, mute it, transfer it and even switch to video calling.
In addition to calls and messages, you can also play games within the app. To do this, you need to download each game separately. The games are similar to the ones you can play on Facebook. Once you've downloaded, you can even play with your partners.
Other options
Today, Viber is not only used by individuals, but also by companies, brands or news portals, which can be found under the so-called "Public accounts" menu. In practice, thanks to this feature, companies or brands can send us a message in the same way as if they were starting a chat, but these messages are public and can be seen by anyone who subscribes to the chat. In the case of a news portal, for example, we can get the latest news through the chat. But you can also send a private message to a brand.
