Where and how do top startups get their links? | Weboptim

Companies have many things to worry about... how much cash flow will they have? Will employees be paid? Will they meet their quarterly targets? Why is the website/mobile app slow?

Startups need to take care of marketing

Regardless of whether a start-up is doing PR and paid acquisition, SEO is present and there is a constant debate about marketing activities. Want to grow your business and get feedback on new products faster? Then consider SEO, or search engine optimisation, as an option.

The holistic marketing approach

As we know, several different marketing channels are working together to help SEO. Gone are the days when you could predict which keywords a piece of online content will rank for based on the keywords it contains.

PR efforts can be very effective in terms of link building as well as driving traffic to your website, increasing the number of important conversions.

As a startup, we can get mentions from different sites by presenting our company. And one of those mentions can lead to more mentions, which can lead to links and increased traffic.

Here's how startups are building links today and where they can get links from.

Who are the top startup companies?

It is not necessary to list all Startup companies, only the domains that connect them, because the list would be long and that is not the point of this article.

Here are the links!

Let's look at how the top 100 startups get links from common domains. We've probably heard of all of these. It is worth looking at what type of links these are. Let's categorise them. Most are likely to come from PR.

How "normal" is your link profile?

An important question is what a natural link profile looks like and how natural a link profile of competitors looks.

Years ago, we often talked about the natural link profile and how many websites are not committed to active link building. Basically, the Domain Authority is the most important indicator, describing an exponential scale. It's easy enough to get to 0-20, but it's harder to move beyond that. Many websites are below 30-35 and few above.

What we find is that most Startup companies do not have a manipulative link graph that could harm them in the future.

Can the links change at different stages of the company?

Another important question is: how do start-ups change after launch in terms of domain authority and linking domains at each stage of their development (start-up, Series A, Series B)?
We believe that the older a company is, the more and stronger its links. Let's look at an average link count for each section:

On average, companies in Series A have more links than those in Series B and C, which explains the growing number of tech blogs and the recent funding boom in 2013-2015.

Conclusion

The links only partly contribute to success, but they tell us who is popular. And of course, the better quality and higher authority links we have, the better rankings we can achieve.

The ways to build links as a startup:

  • PR (e.g. big news sites)
  • Placed links (e.g. Facebook profile)
  • Editorial links (we are mentioned in a blog post written by the blogger)
  • Blogs (e.g. guest blogging, comments)

Startups should focus on links that are on pages that could drive traffic to the website.
